Research Project Proposal

For my research project, I have decided to explore (no pun intended) the act and art behind urban exploring. This fulfills for me, a lot of various aspects of time, space and the everyday, as well as having a close meaning to myself, personally.

Along the lines of this subject, I want to look into 'place hacking', parkour, graffiti and other aspects of urban art and investigation.

I feel that the subject of urban exploring is an important one to document, since it confronts a lot of issues that today's society brings up. For example, the illegality of the act itself, the politics of de-industrialization and the failures of capitalism, as well as many more artistically directed issues such as graffiti (which to this day is still a taboo) and how the places are an art form in themselves.

In a world where we're told to keep our heads down, sit up straight and not climb trees, I think it's important that we ignore those rules and look up, walk around, climb trees, touch walls and embrace what we've created.

I want to document why I think it's important for these practices to continue in my essay, where I will be analyzing the relevance of urban exploring and it's associated arts in today's society and the impact it's having on culture, art and politics.
